Do you have any removable drive which you want to format but not able to do? Definitely, you have. This problem is very common and almost every person has faced the message: “You need to format the disk in the drive before you can use it”.

Sometimes, when we insert a removable disk, it displays a message just like that.

That time, if you are going to format it directly, the removable drive will deny. So to overcome this problem we are going to discuss, how to format Pen Drive using DOS.

Note: If you are going to format the drive then you will definitely lose all the data stored into this removable drive.

But don’t worry.

You can also try to recover deleted files if you had lost all data from your drive.

There are many ways to format a drive when you face such problem. But, to format using CMD is the best and secure way for any kind of drives. So, to complete the format using CMD or command prompt just follow these steps which are given below--


At first, connect your removable drive with your Laptop then just click on the Start button and search CMD.


After that, you will find CMD in the search box. Then right-click on it and click on Run as administrator.


Then, there will come a command prompt window or DOS window. Now type “diskpart” and then press enter.


After that type “list disk” and press enter to see all drives.

*Note: After pressing Enter, you will see two disks which are Disk 0 and Disk 1. Disk 0 is your laptop hard drive and Disk 1 is your removable drive. Now you will format the removable drive.


Then type “select disk 1” and press enter to select that removable drive.

*Note: Be careful whenever you select the disk name. Because one wrong input will lead to lose all your data from that selected drive.


Then type “clean” and press Enter to clean the drive. Here will see the message that 'DiskPart succeeded in cleaning the disk'.


Then type “create partition primary” and press enter to make partition into your selected drive. On successful, you will see a message that 'Diskpart succeeded in creating the specified partition'.


After that type “select partition 1” and hit the Enter button to select the USB partition which you have made through the previous command.


Then type “active” and press enter to activate the partition which you have selected.


Now type "format fs=fat32 quick" and press Enter to start the format for your drive. It will take few seconds and once the process is completed, it will show a message that 'Diskpart successfully formatted the volume'.

Note: But if you are using “NTFS” file system then type “format fs=ntfs quick“ and then press Enter.


After that, type “assign” & hit the Enter to assign the drive so that you can use it.


Now type “exit” and press enter to leave the CMD operation. Now close the CMD window.

Now check your drive and you will find that drive has formatted completely. So this is how you can easily format any USB Drive by CMD.
