Make SD Card as Default Storage for All WhatsApp Data

Due to my presence in too many WhatsApp groups, some files are coming into my WhatsApp Messenger inbox every minute and if I watch it from there it is downloaded on my phone storage that sometimes creates the slow speed issue on the Android device.
 
To get recovered from this issue I just thought how this would be if I just move my WhatsApp to the SD card on my mobile phone and for all incoming messages that data can be stored on the SD card instead of internal storage so that my internal memory can have a good space left.
 
 
To make the SD card as default WhatsApp storage for your Android device, first, you have to get your device rooted then use the XInternalSD on your rooted device and make the setup to store the data on that SD card.
For these steps that I am going to share in this article, you have to follow for yourself if you want to have the same feature on your Android.

WhatsApp stores all of the media files (sent or received) on your device. But, this normally hits the phone storage limit within a few weeks or months. Means, no more space on your phone to store the new files.

Here, the most complicated part is started… How to download the new WhatsApp files on your device?

Without downloading those on your phone you can’t view this. As you know the files which are sent by your contacts, are downloaded automatically.

But, in this case, if your contacts send you the files, these files will not be able to complete the download.

 

Advantages for moving WhatsApp to SD card

 
If you can move your WhatsApp data to the SD card there are many advantages that you can grab with your phone, let’s describe these into a few points:
 
1. First of all, your mobile storage will be free up a bit that got stored with WhatsApp data or files.
 
2. Now, if you just uninstall your WhatsApp from your mobile phone the Stored data on the SD card will not be removed, in case the WhatsApp is mounted onto the SD card the data can be deleted upon uninstallation.
 
3. Your mobile will be performing faster than before as you have just cleared up some space on the phone storage if you have limited/short storage on your Android device.
 

Does this work for all devices including Mi or Samsung?

If you want to use WhatsApp on your SD card for the data storage then the device should be Android, just follow the process that I’m going to describe in this article.
 
Either it is my Samsung, HTC, or any other branded mobiles including Google pixel–you can follow the simple methods and do the following steps to make the default WhatsApp storage to the SD card.
 
Note: Before starting the process make sure you just backed up your WhatsApp data files onto your Google Drive account so that you can restore the files if any deletion is needed in this process. Whatever it is, take the backup first.
 
 
 

Move WhatsApp to SD Card as Default Storage

You can move the old files to the external SD card and also change the default storage to the SD card for WhatsApp media.

But, to make the SD card as default storage for WhatsApp media, you have to use the third-party app on your rooted phone.

On the lower versions of Android, below 4.4 this is possible without any root process.

The top three apps are good for this process. the list is below:

1. XInternalSD
2. Photo & File Redirect (without Root)
3. FolderMount
 

How to Move WhatsApp Media to External SD Card?

When you don’t have rooting access on your phone, you can follow this method of transferring the WhatsApp media to the SD card and make it the default storage media place.
 
To proceed any further, you need to connect the device with the USB cable. Make sure it is compatible and works along with the mobile phone. After that, you should start the process.
 

Step 1: Connect a working and a compatible working cable to your Android Phone to the PC. The PC should detect the USB cable, so connect a good quality one.

Step 2: After you connect the Android phone to the PC by using a USB cable, the PC will detect the phone. Then, go to the location where the device folder is situated. Then, select the folder.

Step 3: Find the WhatsApp folder in the list and select that.

Step 4: After this step, select the folder and copy it carefully to the other folder, the SD memory card folder.

Step 5: Now this is one of the methods you can employ to make your SD card folder in your phone to be the default folder for storing your WhatsApp media.

 
That’s all. You are done. Now your phone memory will be empty to place new data.
 
 

Change Default WhatsApp Media Storage to External SD (for Rooted Phones)

By using the third-party tools like XInternalSD, FolderMount you can make the external SD card as WhatsApp default storage. Just need to root your android device.
 
These apps can help you to select any other apps and games to store in your SD card by default.
 
Here is the step-by-step guide for XInternalSD app below:
 
  • Step #1: You can also make the SD card folder as the default folder to save your WhatsApp media. Just download XInternalSD. This helps in changing the path for any customized path.
  • Step #2: After downloading the app, you should open the user interface of XInternalSD app.
  • Step #3: Then, change the internal SD card to an external SD card.XInternalSD whatsapp storage changer
  • Step #4: Now, select WhatsApp option from enabling for apps.XInternalSD for whatsapp
  • Step #5: Copy the WhatsApp folder to the external SD card folder. After this, make sure you remove or delete the WhatsApp folder from the internal SD card folder.
  • Step #6: Once, this is over, you can see that your WhatsApp media is getting saved to the external SD card folder which you have done with the help of the app.

These are apps you can start with if your phone has root access. Also, apps like Photo & File Redirect can easily set or change the default storage without any root. If anything goes wrong and you forgot to backup still you have a chance to recover these.
