Snapchat messages tend to disappear within a maximum of 24 hours after it is viewed, although some set it instantly. But, these messages sometimes do not go away even after 24 hours have been passed.
Whatever the reasons are either it is an error or something else like settings, I will discuss it here in this article. Normally, if you see the messages are still there even after a day then maybe the person has saved it.
But, if these are not the things then you must check the sent messages if they are really delivered or not, as sometimes due to network issue the messages even could not be sent from you end.
Even sometimes the saved messages go disappeared on Snapchat, all things possible in a bug where you can contact Snapchat support directly if you think it’s personal for your account.
In this article, I will describe the entire topic with all reasons possible that could be the connector of this issue of not disappearing the Snapchat messages. Let’s dive in.
Why do the Snapchat messages not Go Away?
There might be multiple reasons behind these messages that don’t go away automatically. Snapchat servers are automatically developed in such a way that the sent messages disappear within 24 hours although can be changed for some messages that do not disappear.
For this, I just sent a bunch of messages to my friends and waited for which ones do not go away. I just found that when it was set to 24 hours in the settings, the messages can only disappear after that period of time once viewed, only if that was not saved. But, some messages just got failed to send due to any internal error, however, that I managed to send them again. But the issue is if those are kept as so, the message won’t disappear as those were not actually sent.
Here are the possible reasons that cause the issue:
1. The message in a one-to-one conversation has not been viewed
Viewing the chat in a one-to-one conversation (by default) would delete the message immediately after viewing. However, once the message has been viewed, it can be right-swiped to delete or set to “24 Hours after Viewing”. If the message has been sent to someone who has not viewed it yet, the message stays.
- Even it stays in the Snapchat chat list for more than 24 hours by changing the erase rules in Chat settings according to the user’s convenience.
- Switching from “24 hrs after viewing” to “after viewing” will make the previously viewed chats disappear automatically.
2. The person may have saved the Message:
Directly, if the person just saves the Snapchat message from his end then the message would not be removed. It is only when a user leaves the screen before saving the message then he/she cannot view the message by any chance. Saving important messages will help the users to hold onto the message for a long time.
Snapchatters always have the advantage to save a message that would not disappear from snapchat :
- A message can be saved by pressing to it and holding it till it gets saved.
- Then the message becomes bold and gets highlighted in grey.
- The grey indicator helps to know that the message has been saved and is not ready to disappear from Snapchat soon.
- Users can unsave the saved messages which will get erased as soon as one leaves the chat screen.
How long do Snapchat Messages last?
As I said I run an experiment where I found many things and this information would be really helpful that what happens to the unopened chats on Snapchat.
If the person does not open the chat within the next 30 days upon receiving the message, that will be automatically deleted. This means he/she would not be able to view that after 30 days.
If you are wondering to change this, it is the internal settings from the Snapchat server that is how it is designed, you cannot change it.
Why won’t the Snapchat Messages go away even those aren’t saved?
Even if the messages aren’t saved they sometimes won’t disappear for a few reasons. That could be anything like messages failed, viewed but it is not 24 hours passed.
The question arises whether Snapchat messages disappear suddenly if they aren’t saved. The most common answers to this question can be summed up as below:
The chat message was not read:
Messages will stay in Snapchat unless and until they are viewed by other users to whom the message was sent. You can easily identify by opening the chat if the person has read the messages. If he reads the message the same will be disappeared within a maximum of 24 hours from the time it was viewed. So, if the messages are still there even after 24-48 hours then you can say it is not viewed yet.
The message takes 24 hours to be deleted:
Normally, once the message has been viewed by another user then it will automatically get deleted once he/she leaves the screen.
If you have the settings that set for “24 hours after viewing” then the message will stay for 24 hours even it was viewed by the person on another end.
However, in the chat settings, the number of hours for which the message to stay can be changed from 24 hours (by default).
Make sure messages didn’t fail:
You should make sure the message was successfully sent. Sometimes due to the network issue or app error that fails to deliver, be cautious on that thing as well.
Can one Delete a Snap from his end?
In normal cases, the read messages get deleted as soon the person leaves the screen. But, in case they have not viewed that yet and you want to delete the snap then there are only a few possibilities to achieve this.
As Snapchat does not offer you an option to undo any sent message for both ends at once, you can only just the option to wait for getting it viewed or almost 30 days for permanent removal.
You will only see the option to delete the snap to delete from your end only by swiping that to the right. Well, now let’s get to the point of how to actually get it removed.
Besides saving a message, you as a Snapchatter can delete it as well. Let’s dive into this for more steps to delete a snap:
Once a snap has been sent by you, have no other option to undo but you can delete it from your end only.
If you’re looking for ways to delete the snap from the other person’s end then the unopened snaps get automatically deleted if not viewed within the next 30 days upon it was received.
For easy delete steps: Tap on the snap, Press ‘Delete’ on that pop-up on the screen, and you’re done!
The Bottom Lines:
The article explained what may be the reasons behind your Snapchat messages that won’t disappear and why it is so that the messages are totally removed after 30 days. Hope this clears your uncertainty on this issue.
